Nottingham International Workshop

The Mapping Grey Areas in International Legal Approaches to the Failure of Crypto Firms project reached its main event, an in-person workshop at the Crowne Plaza Nottingham. We were delighted to see here many of those involved in previous online workshops, together with others who were new to the event. In total we have been pleased to have involved participants from 20 countries as the global nature of crypto assets and crypto service providers requires a global approach. The in-person event was the third workshop and built upon the two previous online workshops, as well as the supporting research work.

We had excellent discussions about centralised and decentralised exchanges, stablecoins and unbacked crypto as well as crypto custodians. We were grateful also to Marilyne Ordekian for telling us about her EPSRC sponsored research at UCL and to Prof Iris Chiu who, in an online lecture, addressed regulatory concerns regarding crypto custodians and decentralised exchanges. The two day discussions really highlighted how many grey areas in crypto insolvencies there are, as these are global businesses and the place where an insolvency is likely to take place can be uncertain. Please see the Key Findings document that is available on this website.

We are grateful to everyone who attended both in person and online via Microsoft Teams. We thank the Arts and Humanities Research Council for sponsoring the network and our partners INSOL International and the Istanbul Bar Association.
